Patriotism VS Racism
Definition of Patriotism?
Patriotism or national pride is the feeling of love, devotion, and sense of attachment to a homeland or the country and alliance with other citizens who share the same sentiment to create a feeling of oneness among the people.
Definition of Racism?
A belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.
You may find yourself in gray water, an unclearness on whether you have pride in your country or are prejudice towards others. Flying an American flag at your house or on your car maybe looked at as someone to stay away from as you might be racist.
Many Americans may not like the direction of where the U.S. government is going but would still consider themselves patriotic and that change needs to happen. There are also many Americans that feel that it certainly starts with the American people as the activist group “BLM” puts out a statement criticizing that the American flag as a “Hate Symbol”.
While the American flag is meant to represent freedom, dignity, and opportunity for all, many feel that this doesn’t holds true today.
Lex Scott founder of Black Lives Matter Utah states:
“I don’t take it back because some of us live in a different America… We really do. We don’t have the same experience as the people who are flying that flag.”
The American Flag has stood the test of time as a beacon to freedom, many lives have been lost to preserve that symbol and all it stands for. While one group may fly it out of its ordinary without its permission to fully serve the American people and on the other hand a group may criticize the flag itself for the people on the other side that selfishly fly it with their own careless agenda.
It seems Americans have created many stereotypes over a symbol. Therefore creating those stereotypes on people, some of which maybe true and some which are not. We create hate in which an inanimate object cannot. If we continue to fight each other we will never resolve the true issues that lie within our country. Our country is not perfect but until we can unite as one and fix what is so wrong and evil about it, we will never succeed.
