Ultra Modern razr+
“Flip the script” is the motto for the new Motorola razr+ and it comes as a major upgrade from the older models along with its competitors lurking on the horizon! One of our very own MCETV Team Members reviews their personal take on Motorola foldables, going from the razr 5G (2020) to the all new razr+ (top model).
One beautiful thing that has always been admired by Motorola is the interface they give their product, it's always so simple yet innovative! The company created and masters many of it's own widgets instead of relying on Google's products. Motorola goes beyond giving quick gesture hand tip tutorials on how to use their interface, giving access to the apps you need instantly with a motion of your wrist, a flick of your finger or a sequenced tap providing the best experience for the consumer. The razr even provides fun little games to kill time with perfectly suited for the external display. Trust me Android isn't just Android. Having a temporary moment with Google Pixel when my razr 5G was down in which I would hands down recommend over Apple & Samsung just didn't give me the feel I wanted that Motorola provides consistently with their product. To say the least I was relieved that the Google Pixel (6a model for compact) was temporary.
Lets be honest, now days it's physically impossible to find a high-end phone that isn't the size of a tablet, until now that is. The closest you can get are with Sony Xperia's and Asus Zenfone's which are another option that is highly recommended if your service provider and wallet allow it. That being it is wonderful to see Motorola making flagship devices again and ones that are compact and can confidently fit in the palm of your hand.
As for the razr+ I find myself not opening the phone nearly as much as the past models as the external interface is even larger and more app friendly, letting me do nearly anything and everything on the front interface, leaving the foldable bigger screen inside for larger indulging. In which not only minimalizes wear and tear on this new foldable technology but gives you the most compact phone yet. Quality build and feel is just as good as the originals, although less comes in the packaging from the previous models.
The foldable screen is smoother and less bumpy and the crease is nearly undetectable unless you look for it and as always Motorola has kept its foldable screens flush to the close unlike its competitors with gaps in-between. The mechanics of closing the screen are different. The foldable screen doesn't have the slight movement into the chin (as the 5G model) as there is no chin and it's more stiff and a little awkward to open. I liked how the old models had the chin, not only for the classic unique look but that it entirely enclosed the device when shut, plus opening the device was more natural in my opinion on the older models. But this could also be due to the phone now being able to fold at multiple angles which is a plus, so for that it only makes sense to value this perk as Motorola goes for an ultra modern look this time around. That being said the razr + is now “modern” in which means it's more blocky and not as sleek in my opinion. It's more of a regular phone look that folds in half rather than the sleek enclosed look mentioned earlier but again this is what the consumer wants, at least for now. Motorola was able to hide the gaps of the foldable screen near the hinge and edges so well compared to the first models that confidence in their direction compliments the device as a whole and believe Motorola will turn heads.
Overall this phone is beautiful and runs with more power under the hood although it's not the latest phone tech, it definitely has more than what the old versions had. Plus to keep costs down and even offering a lower end model is a good marketing scheme. The battery seems great right now especially if I'm mainly using the external screen I'm sure that will make a huge impact. Along with Motorola’s well known Turbo Charger that will have you charged in minimal time, with a secondary option of wireless charging for the first time for the razr franchise. The fact you can get it in multiple colors is also a great perk. I've always gotten black for it's sleek classic look but decided to go bold with the “Glacier Blue” color this time around! Although the new razr may have made its new “Viva Magenta” (red color) an iconic color to remember for the franchise.
Although I love the external display and believe this is one of the big reasons to get the razr+, I think they should've expanded it a little more. It does take up the majority of the front of the phone, even all the way down past the camera lens which can be odd at times when browsing but better that it does than doesn't. If you notice there is a 1/2 inch of black at the top of the display that could have been easily used for more room with no interference whatsoever. I would even take them switching it and making the black unusable part of the screen towards where the lens are but I'd take all of the screen coverage if possible. You also have the option to adjust the borders per app but then you sacrifice size, which again isn't a major deal breaker and is thoughtful that adjustments can be made for every scenario. The biometrics button has also moved to the rockers on the right side, it was originally on the Motorola logo on the backside of the phone. All preference of course as some would say change is good and the rest would say change is bad. For this perspective change is good, even if it takes a bit to get used to just know there is a bigger plan to it all!
Yes this is more of a nitpicking as it doesn't dilute it's performance by any means, the razr+ still gives you uniqueness, as there is nothing out on the market to really compare it's gorgeous OLED external display to. Some would say well “what about the Samsung Z flip?”, As of right now Samsungs doesn't have a very big external screen and never has, it compares more to the lower end razr 2023 rather. I'm sure Samsungs next future models will be learning a thing or two from Motorola and taking jabs but why not go with the O.G. of flip phones instead? Motorola may be underated compared to mainstream Apple/Samsung but ambition to get back on top lies heavily on Motorola.
I know I mentioned some cons but all set aside this phone is a major upgrade from the originals and would highly recommend it for its price! Steer clear of Samsung’s foldables and give Motorola a shot! You are also able to get the lower end version for cheaper, it doesn’t come with the full external display and has a little less power under the hood but if this doesn’t bother you and you just want an affordable cool foldable phone, this is definitely an option. Price for the razr 2023 is still TBA but will probably be a couple hundred dollars cheaper later this year.
Don't want to pay full price? Here are your options:
I also saw that T-Mobile customers are able to get it half off if not free!
Through AT&T new and existing customers SAVE $820 and get the motorola razr+ for $5/mo. No trade-in required.
If you are like me and like to buy phones outright, that way it doesn't affect your phone plan, the other option I saw (in which I did) is buying it through Best Buy as they offer it at $100 cheaper if you let them “activate” it, although for the most part putting your old SIM Card will work and mentioning this to them during activation could save you some time. If you have a Best Buy credit card even better as it's 2 years interest-free.
Motorola also offers $200 off when you trade in your old razr for the new one. Or receive the super high end Bose QuiteComfort Earbuds II for free with a purchase of the razr! The earbuds alone are valued at $300!
Top Accessory Picks:
Screen Protector
Skinomi provides a full body protector at a affordable price and usually comes as a 2pk! You can choose between a matte finish and the regular gloss look. It also comes with the inside foldable screen protector but we would advise of disposing of this part as Motorola cautions not to put anything on its foldable screens as they already come protected. This product is warrantied and is an easy application, if you mess up on both 2pks they are kind enough to send you another.

TERPINK Clear Case gives the the opportunity to enjoy your unique color of phone and also includes full protection, even around the hinge. There is two styles available in case you prefer a sleeker look. You won’t find anything cheaper than this as the case starts at under $5!
