DOJ steps in
The Department of Justice said on Monday, it would protect women who are seeking abortions in the state of Texas, following the passage of a controversial abortion law in the state.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said, "The Department will provide support from federal law enforcement when an abortion clinic or reproductive health center is under attack. We have reached out to U.S. Attorneys Offices and FBI field offices in Texas and across the country to discuss our enforcement authorities."
"We will not tolerate violence against those seeking to obtain or provide reproductive health services, physical obstruction or property damage in violation of the FACE Act."
The FACE Act was singed into law in 1994, which prohibits the use or threat of force and physical obstruction that injures or interferes with a person who is seeking to obtain or provide reproductive services, also prohibits damage to a health facility that provides reproductive services.
Governor of Texas Gregg Abbott signed the legislation which placed an effective ban on almost all abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is normally six weeks into a women's pregnancy.
